Hudson Swafford leads by two shots at the midway point of the Corales Puntacana Resort Club Championship in the Dominican Republic after shooting a 5-under-par 67 on Friday.
Swafford held a share of the first-round lead after an opening 65, and took over the solo lead with birdies on two of his first five holes Friday. Starting on the back nine, Swafford posted a pair of birdies and bogies from Holes 1-5 before reeling off three consecutive birdies to end his round and reach 12 under for the tournament.
Fellow Americans Luke List, Sean O'Hair and Justin Suh are two shots back at 10 under. Suh, ranked 885th in the world and playing primarily on the LocaliQ Series organized by the PGA Tour during the coronavirus pandemic, chipped in for birdie on No. 17 and buried a long par putt on 18 to remain tied for second.
Adam Long, Canada's Mackenzie Hughes, Austria's Sepp Straka and China's Xinjun Zhang are another shot off the pace. Hughes had the highest finish in last year's FedEx Cup (No. 14) of anyone in the field.
Sweden's Henrik Stenson, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 43, enters the weekend in a group at 5 under that also includes first-round co-leader Scott Harrington. Harrington shot a 2-over 74 on Friday.
Canada's Graham DeLaet turned in the low round of the tournament with a 64 on Friday, but at 2 under he missed the 36-hole cut by a shot. The 65s turned in by List and Long were tied for the second-lowest rounds on Friday.
Defending champion Graeme McDowell also missed the cut, as did Canada's Corey Conners. Will Zalatoris, who entered as the pre-tournament betting favorite, made the cut on the number after opening with rounds of 70 and 71, but is nine shots back of Swafford entering the weekend.
NOTES: The event was rescheduled from March due to COVID-19. Typically an alternate-field event opposite the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, it features full FedEx Cup points for the first time along with a spot in the 2021 Masters for the winner. ... Straka is the first Austrian to earn a PGA Tour card. ... Zalatoris, who made the cut at the U.S. Open, is playing on a sponsor exemption. ... The Tour visits Jackson, Miss., for the Sanderson Farms Championship next week.
